A Call for Unity, Peace, and Blessings
The 100 Million Vajra Guru Mantra Chanting Ceremony is a sacred annual tradition that began in 2004 at the request of devotees from Solukhumbu. Under the guidance of the revered H.H. Taglung Chetul Rinpoche, then head of the Nyingma Buddhist tradition, the chanting of the Vajra Guru Mantra was initiated. Solukhumbu, a land rich in hidden treasures and spiritual heritage, became the birthplace of this collective practice to honor the teachings of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche).
Since its inception, the program has expanded beyond Solukhumbu to various districts, including Dolakha, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok. Last year, the 17th ceremony was held in Kerung, Solukhumbu. This year, the 18th 100 Million Vajra Guru Mantra Chanting Ceremony will take place from March 30 to April 8, 2025, in Charikot, Dolakha, the district headquarters.
The Significance of Chanting the Vajra Guru Mantra
The mantra, “Om Ah Hung Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hung,” encapsulates the essence of Guru Padmasambhava’s teachings. Revered as the “Second Buddha” and the founder of Tantra Yana, Guru Padmasambhava bestowed this twelve-syllable mantra as a means to invoke his blessings for both spiritual and worldly success by harmonizing body, speech, and mind.
The deeper meaning of the mantra is a heartfelt prayer:
“O Guru Padmasambhava, grant me the ultimate and temporary siddhis (attainments) through your enlightened body, speech, and mind. May I embody your virtues and power.”
Chanting this mantra with unwavering devotion and a pure heart helps overcome obstacles, attain inner peace, and contribute to global harmony.
The Purpose of the Ceremony
This auspicious program aims to:
- Promote religious tourism in the Dolakha district while fostering global peace.
- Cultivate faith and spiritual awareness for personal and collective growth.
- Preserve the cultural and spiritual heritage of Dolakha.
- Alleviate suffering caused by diseases, famine, natural calamities, and social strife.
- Foster a compassionate, ethical, and enlightened society.
- Bestow blessings upon all sentient beings, guiding them toward the ultimate goal of Buddhahood.
